The plant captures 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year – the equivalent to taking over 20,000 cars off the roads.
Once the vessels are retrofitted, they will sail with a 20% emissions reduction and trade in North-West Europe.
This will be Canada’s first-of-a-kind commercial-scale carbon capture and removal manufacturing facility.
This stage of the L10 carbon capture and storage project has the potential to store 4-5 million tonnes of CO2 annually for industrial customers within depleted gas fields around the Neptune-operated L10-A, B and E areas.
Drax’s project could capture 8 million tonnes of CO2 a year from 2030, making it the largest CCUS project in the world.
The carbon dioxide waste stream will be captured, compressed, and then disposed of through permanent sequestration.
